DECA Coax Networking


DECA is DirecTV's version of MOCA, or ethernet over coax, that they are using to connect receivers together for Whole Home DVR Service and network features like TVApps, OnDemand, and DirecTV2PC. The great thing about DECA is that it allows the receivers to be networked all with the same cabling the is already required for service. This means no extra wires to run and no worries about getting network connections to each of your receivers if you want the more advanced features.


Getting DECA

The easiest way to get setup with DECA is to do the Whole Home DVR Service upgrade which costs $99 + $49 installation fee. In the future this should also be available in new customer packages. This will get you setup with DECA and the Whole Home DVR Service.


Requirements

One limitation of DECA is that it does require you to be using a SWiM setup. You also will need to have all the receivers on one SWiM module for them to see each other as one DECA Cloud. This leaves you a few options if you want all your receivers to be able to talk to each other for things like Whole Home DVR Service, a SWMLNB module, SWM8, or SWM16. You cannot use multiple SWM8s together if you want all the receivers to be on the same cloud. One of the main benefits of the SWM16 is that it has an internal DECA bridge to allow all connected receivers see each other on the same DECA cloud.

One other specific requirement comes up with the HR20-100. It cannot power the DECA module from it's satellite port like the other receivers so you must use a splitter setup to connect both satellite ports to the DECA...one provides the power to the module and the other provides the satellite connection to the receiver. More details on these setups can be found on DirecTV specific forums as it is a bit more complex, but something any installer should be able to deal with.


Components of a DECA setup

DECA is actually very straight forward to install and setup. It is very plug n play.

-First off, current receivers that have ethernet ports but no DECA built in (everything prior to the H24/HR24) will need a DECA module. This small box connects between the satellite feed coming into the receiver and the receiver itself. It has a coax in on one side and a short patch coming out of the other so that no additional wires are needed. Also provided is a short ethernet patch cable that goes from the DECA module to the receiver's ethernet port. That is all that is required, the receiver powers the DECA module (except for in the case of the HR20-100 that requires some extra setup).

-Receivers with DECA built in, currently the HR24 and H24, don't need anything extra. Everything is built into the receiver and connects up automatically.

-An Internet Bridge is used to get your home internet connection into the DECA cloud. This is really just another DECA module that comes with a power inserter to power it from a standard power outlet. The power inserter connects to the DECA module via the coax patch it comes with. Then you plug the ethernet port from the DECA into your home network router or switch.

-The final component used on some installs is the Band Stop Filter (BSF). This is just a frequency filter to filter out the DECA frequency range. This is required to go between older SWiM Module units and the rest of your satellite setup as well as on other receivers that do not have a DECA module attached or DECA built-in. A BSF is also used with the HR20-100 in its unique setup utilizing both of its satellite ports.
